Peter Green - February 13, 2019
Wellington Phoenix vs Melbourne Victory
Australia – A-League
Date: Friday, 15 February 2019
Kick-off at 06.35 UK/ 07.35 CET
Venue: Wellington Regional Stadium (Wellington).
The tough loss that Victory had to endure against Perth Glory surely has given them a reality check. After the outstanding form, they were in, no one really anticipated that the team might lose, and at home nonetheless.
The hosts had the game within their reins and were constantly testing the backline of Glory. But a 61st-minute penalty took matters out of their control. After the shot was converted, the visitors added one more in the next eight minutes. Big V was able to pull one back, but by then the cause was lost.
The Nix have been good at home in the last two months. Except for the unlucky slip against Sydney, they have maintained their formidable presence at the Regional Stadium. Their resolve might be put to the test though, this weekend, as they take on a wounded beast.
Mark Rudan’s men are not in any immediate danger, as they have built up quite a big safety cushion between themselves and the Jets. This fact might prove to provide a sense of calm as the relentless Big V players come visiting.
Kevin Muscat’s men are the best goal-scoring squad in the league and have posted the most number of goals overall, as well as on the road. Also, they come into this tie determined to make a point, after their loss in the last match-day, against the league-toppers.
Coming to Phoenix, the team has been on fire at home, and look to extend their form. They won four of their last five home-ties and found the back of the net in nine of their last eleven attempts.
In h2h ties, the fierce nature of these two teams has been on full display. 19 of the last 23 overall games and 14 of the last 16 at the Wellington Regional Stadium had three or more goals. Also, the last five overall games in succession and 11 of the last 16 at this venue had goals from both teams.
Expect these sides to keep in line with the trend, and add one more to the tally.
