Peter Green - August 14, 2020
Waasland-Beveren vs Standard Liege
Belgium – First Division A
Date: Monday, 17 August 2020
Kick-Off at 18:00 UK/ 19:00 CET
Venue: Freethiel Stadion (Beveren)
The team from Beveren was lucky that the league was expanded to 18 teams. But they have to make use of that luck to perform better this year around. They were lucky enough to play Kortrijk in the opening game. That away game finished 1-3 in favor of Leeuwen and that would have given them great confidence coming into their first home match of this campaign.
Liege has also started with a win, a narrow one-goal game against Cercle Brugge. But the team that finished fifth last time will be looking for a much better-attacking show than last time where they were the lowest scoring among the top five.
Even on one of their worst seasons, Beveren managed to win this fixture last season. They remain unbeaten in the last three head to head games at this ground. But as of late they have been losing back to back matches in the league. So that is a concern for the home crowd. Similarly, the visitors have also lost two of their recent matches on the road against teams like Kortrijk and Charleroi. So I think we may see them share points on Monday.
Both of them have found the target in their only match of the season. Most of their previous meetings at this ground had goals at both ends of the field. Beveren has scored three in their opening game but has also conceded once. So I am backing the match to draw with both teams scoring.
