Villarreal and Real Betis will lock horns in the opening round of the 2023/24 La Liga season on Sunday evening at Estadio de la Ceramica.

There was not much to separate these two outfits last year as they finished the domestic league right next to each other, in fifth and sixth place respectively.

Both teams have made some changes to their roster, Villarreal in particular, but we pretty much expect a similar campaign for them this time around.

Villarreal were forced to be quite active on the market this summer. They lost several high-profile players in between the two seasons as the likes of Nicolas Jackson, Samu Chukwueze, and Pau Torres all made big moves to the Premier League and Serie A respectively.

El Submarino Amarillo are expected to reinvent the new stars. They have made some exciting signings such as the one of Alexander Sorloth from RB Leipzig or Denis Suarez from Celta Vigo but head coach Quique Setien will certainly need some time to adjust to life without the aforementioned players.

When it comes to Betis, they’ve brought some familiar names to the squad, signing Marc Bartra and Hector Bellerin for their second spells in the Seville-based club. Isco and Marc Roca are also there to add depth in the center of the park.

Neither Villarreal nor Betis showed any kind of positive rhythm in the preseason. The hosts lost three and drew two of the last five friendlies, scoring just two goals in the process. Los Beticos, on the other side, notched only a single goal in the last three exhibitions, falling 0-1 in back-to-back clashes against Sevilla and Real Sociedad in the last two tests.

Taking everything into consideration, the Under 2.5 goals FT pick has to be the way to go at the odds of 2.10 while we also like Real Betis to avoid a defeat at the attractive 2.05 odds.
