Valenciennes used to be a staple fixture of Ligue 1 and they will try once again to get back into the top league as their Ligue 2 season kicks off against Auxerre.
The club had a very average season and finished in 13th place, but were always clear and safe and ended up finishing 9 points above the bottom three.
Auxerre like Valenciennes have had many seasons in the top flight of French football and used to be involved in many of the top European competitions. Last season they finished two places about their hosts and one could say they both had the same seasons in that respect.
This should be a fascinating tie then against two has been Ligue 1 teams now wanting to get off to the best possible start in Ligue 2.
The bookmakers have the home side just slight favourites and these teams cannot be spilt. This is typical since both have very similar qualities. Given that history says there is a lot of draws between them this makes a prediction even more complex.
Finally we have to throw in that this is the first game of the season, so we don’t know any of these teams yet. Our bet will be to see a low scoring game which has a 100% success rate in recent matches. This is the only market we will back for medium stakes.
