Sunderland vs Southampton Prediction & Match Preview

Steffen Schmidt - August 31, 2023

Sunderland vs Southampton
English Championship
Date: 2 September 2023, Saturday
Kick-off at 12:30 UK / 13:30 CET
Venue: Stadium of Light (Sunderland).

Southampton continued their fine form by beating Queens Park Rangers 2-1 on the home patch last weekend.

It was their second straight 2-1 win, following success away at Plymouth Argyle from two weeks ago.

Left-back Ryan Manning produced one of his best displays in the Saints’ shirt by delivering a couple of assists seven days ago as goals came from Samuel Edozie (his first of the season) and Adam Armstrong.

Head coach Russell Martin has a couple of in-form predators in the final third in the likes of Adam Armstrong (four goals in four games) and Che Adams (three goals in three appearances).

It is no wonder that the Saints own one of the best attacking records in the league with 10 goals scored in the inaugural four rounds.

Southampton will have a chance to extend their fine spell of form on Saturday afternoon with the trip to Stadium of Light where they will face Sunderland in the fifth round of the competition.

Sunderland started the season with a couple of defeats but bounced back by claiming four points in the following two affairs.

They held Coventry to a goalless stalemate on the road last weekend, keeping their maiden clean sheet on the occasion.

Sunderland vs Southampton Head-to-head

  • It’s been six years since these two outfits last met each other and back then they were battling it out in the top flight of English football.
  • Overall, Southampton have been the more successful side historically but they have managed only 7 wins in the previous 23 visits to Stadium of Light.
  • Only one of the previous five head to head matches between Sunderland and Southampton produced three or more goals.

Sunderland vs Southampton Prediction

Southampton are scoring for fun these days and we can certainly see them breaking down the vulnerable Sunderland defense on Saturday.

Knowing that all five games the Saints have played this summer saw the Over 2.5 goals FT & Both Teams To Score option coming in, we have reasons to back this scenario at the 1.95 odds. Alternatively, we will take Southampton to win in the “Draw No Bet” option at the odds of 1.61.

Sunderland vs Southampton Betting Tips

  • Over 2.5 goals FT & Both Teams To Score @ 1.95 (19/20)
  • Draw No Bet – Southampton to win @ 1.61 (8/13) odd.
