Steffen Schmidt - August 3, 2023
Standard Liege vs Union St. Gilloise
Belgian First Division A
Date: 4 August 2023, Friday
Kick-off at 19:45 UK / 20:45 CET
Venue: Stade Maurice Dufrasne (Liege).
Union St. Gilloise will be looking to maintain a perfect record at the start of the 2023/24 First Division A campaign on Friday evening when they travel to Liege to battle Standard in Gameweek No 2 at Stade Maurice Dufrasne.
Union’s players seem to have forgotten the last season’s final day catastrophe when they missed out on a chance to lift their inaugural league trophy since 1935.
The team led by German manager Alexander Blessin picked up a routine 2-0 win over Anderlecht in the season opener courtesy of goals from Dennis Eckert Ayensa and Cameron Puertas.
Union thus translated their tremendous preseason form to competitive matches as the last weekend’s clean sheet was their third in a row if we also count the earlier wins in exhibitions.
Blessin can be thrilled with his team’s defensive performances this summer with Union SG keeping their net untouched in five of six outings.
The same can’t be said for Standard Liege who have kept just one clean sheet in their last six matches.
The hosts are searching for their maiden point(s) in the league following a 0-1 loss at Sint-Truiden last Saturday.
Standard Liege have lost six of the last eight First Division A matches last season. If we count the start of the 2023/24 campaign, they are now winless in nine straight league outings. The momentum is by all means on Union’s side and we will back the visitors to get the win at the 2.10 odds.
Dennis Eckert showed a great display last weekend against Anderlecht and we like the 2.50 odds offered for him to score anytime against a leaky Standard defense on Friday.
