Peter Green - July 30, 2019
St. Pauli vs Greuther Furth
Germany – 2. Bundesliga
Date: Friday, 2 August 2019
Kick-off at 19:30 UK/ 20:30 CET
Venue: Millerntor-Stadion (Hamburg).
Either had to settle for mid-table positions in the 2.Bundesliga last year and definitely will be hoping to improve upon it. But Furth has started on the wrong note, after their first game in the campaign ended in a loss, and that too, against Aue, who had finished just above the relegation zone in 2018-19.
Meanwhile, St. Pauli managed a draw against Arminia, who was in contention for the playoff spots till the very last match-day. Pauli did this in spite of being bridled down with the away handicap.
In addition, the manner of the draw would really just fire up the players, as they had led 0-1 till the 90th minute, only for Bielefeld to find the back of the net then.
Pauli was unbeaten in six of their last seven games and is on a scoring streak of nine fixtures. They also have the confidence of putting on an impressive display in their just previous tie, against a strong team, on the road. At home, they are unbeaten in their last six attempts and was so in 13 of their last 16.
On the other hand, Furth just lost their season-opener, and that too, against an easy opponent. They are also on a losing streak of three ties and is winless in their last four. Going on, they were also winless in 24 of their last 30 overall ties and was so in 12 of their last 14 on the road.
Finally, they have won just twice at this venue against this opponent in the last 20 years, and recorded a 5-0 combined scoreline from the last two face-to-face encounters, in favor of the hosts.
As such, expect the visiting Greuther contingent to find solace with a defeat.
