Sparta Rotterdam and Feyenoord will lock horns in a very interesting city derby in the second round of the 2023/24 Eredivisie season on Sunday afternoon at Sparta-Stadion Het Kasteel.

The season could have hardly started worse for the reigning champions who failed to find the back of the net in either of two official matches this summer.

Feyenoord first suffered a 0-1 home defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the Dutch Super Cup affair two weeks ago as they had to settle only for a goalless draw in the Eredivisie season opener against Fortuna Sittard seven days ago,

Left back Bart Nieuwkoop was the main catalyst for such a disappoint first round result as his red card midway through the first half pretty much shaped the rest of the affair, preventing Feyenoord to dominate as expected in such a contest.

Head coach Arne Slot can already be worried regarding his team’s lack of attacking sharpness in the absence of Orkun Kokcu and Danilo who both left Feyenoord this summer.

Including the preseason friendlies, five of Feyenoord’s last six matches ended with fewer than three goals scored.

Knowing that Sparta Rotterdam is anything but a naïve rival, we would not be surprised to see more problems for the reigning champions after Gameweek No 2.

Speaking of Sparta, they got off to a much better start, beating PEC Zwolle 1-2 on the road last weekend.

Feyenoord have completely dominated this matchup in recent years but the tables seem to have turned ahead of this clash in particular as it will be Sparta who enter it in much higher spirits after the opening day’s fixtures.

The hosts have had one of their best Eredivisie campaigns ever in the previous term of the competition and we fancy them to avoid a defeat on Sunday at the 2.30 odds. Also, knowing about Feyenoord’s attacking woes this summer, we will alternatively take the Under 2.5 goals FT bet at the even more attractive 2.35 odds.
