Southend vs Gillingham
England – League 1
Date: Tuesday, 18 February 2020
Kick-off at 19:45 UK / 20:45 CET
Venue: Roots Hall (Southend on Sea).
Southend are edging closer and closer to the ‘south end’ of the table, with each passing week. With home advantage hardly making a difference for them this term, the hosts are left with no reason to have their hopes up this Tuesday.
Southend failed to pick up even a single point, for the third time on the trot, after Coventry breezed past them at home with a 2-0 scoreline. The hosts hardly made an impact in that latter matchup and were deservedly deprived of even a consolation goal by the end of the ninety minutes.
It is also worth mentioning that the home team have just one win to boast of, from their last five clashes in the third division. With just three measly wins to their name, Southend are currently just five points shy of hitting rock bottom on the ladder.
On the other hand, Gillingham are currently dwelling in the top half of the ladder, with clear daylight separating them from the hosts. In fact, the visitors are on a two-match winning streak, as we speak, and have not been at the losing end in the league, since their 1-0 defeat to AFC Wimbledon back in November.
Furthermore, the guests have stumbled just thrice on the road this season. In sharp contrast, Southend are sporting the worst home statistics in the cluster. Miserably, they have dropped points in thirteen of their past fourteen fixtures here.
Taking into account that the hosts have also secured the bragging rights in just two of their previous six meetings with this foe at home, count on Gillingham to pick up all three points in this one.
Furthermore, Southend have the worst defense in the entire third division. They have conceded thirty-seven goals at home so far, which is at least ten more, than any other side.
Meanwhile, Gillingham have found the back of the net five times from their last three outings alone. Considering that all but one of their past four h2h meetings here have also been high scoring affairs, expect Gillingham to win, and to win big at that.
