Scotland will open the new qualifying campaign on Saturday afternoon with the home fixture against Cyprus at Hampden Park in Glasgow.
The hosts can ill afford a slip-up in front of their fans against arguably the weakest side in the section, especially knowing the likes of Spain and Norway stand in their way for the top-two finish.
Nevertheless, the Scots have plenty of reasons for optimism going into this tie. Head coach Steve Clarke has done an amazing job with this group of players last year, taking the team towards the new heights with strong performances against some high-profile opponents.
Scotland advanced to the elite league in the UEFA Nations League thanks to winning the group with Ukraine, Republic of Ireland, and Armenia. They have won four of six clashes against these rivals, scoring eleven goals in the process.
Clarke can be particularly satisfied with the team’s home form because Scotland have won each of the previous three home clashes, netting at least two goals in each.
Cyprus, on the other side, suffered the elimination to League D by claiming the very bottom of the Group 2 standings in the UEFA Nations League C.
It was a poor campaign for the Cypriots who did manage to lift the team’s spirits with a 2-3 away win over Israel in an exhibition game in November last year.
Cyprus have lost all five World Cup qualifiers on the road in the previous qualifying campaign, The run even includes the shocking 3-0 defeat at the hands of Malta. Knowing how good the Scots have been lately under Steve Clarke, a comprehensive home win has to be the way to go from the betting point of view here.
We will back Scotland to win by two or more goals difference at the 1.75 odds, while we are also very much interested in going for Southampton’s striker Che Adams to score anytime at the 2.00 odds.
