Salzburg start the Champions League play-off tie at home against Danish Champions Brondby on Tuesday as heavy favourites to make it to the group stage for a third consecutive time.
With the impressive Jesse Marsch gone to Leipzig, Salzburg started a new chapter under Matthias Jaissle and in some style, by winning all four league games.
This is an early sign that little has changed at the club over seasons, and they are firm favourites to win the Austrian Bundesliga once again.
Meantime, the focus is switched to Champions League this midweek with an eye on consecutive group stage qualifications after entertaining the spectators with their fluid attacking football in the previous two campaigns.
Brondby won the Danish Superliga title last season, but they are in all kinds of trouble at the start of the season. With 5 games played in the division, they are yet to win a game and drew the first three against moderate teams before losing the latest to Copenhagen and Nordsjaelland.
These are worrying signs for the Boys from Vestegnen. They are hoping for their first ever Champions League qualification and this is the first time they reach the qualifying stage since 2005.
To make things worse, the squad is marred by injuries and the head-coach Niels Frederiksen has his work cut out against the Austrian Bundesliga champions on Tuesday.
Tuesday’s Champions League play-off fixture mark the first ever official head-to-head meeting between Salzburg and Brondby.
This fixture could not have come at the worst possible time for Brondby. Their form is extremely poor, still looking for a first win across all competitions. Also, they have some six first team players out with injuries and illness.
Salzburg started the season on a high and they are coming for this fixture with 100%-win record in league and cup games. And not to mention their 2-1 win over FC Barcelona at the start of this month.
Confidence is high with the Austrians, the same is extremely low with the Danes. Therefore, we are expecting nothing than a comfortable Salzburg win on Tuesday.
