Steffen Schmidt - April 10, 2023
Real Madrid vs Chelsea
UEFA Champions League
Date: 12 April 2023, Wednesday
Kick-off at 20:00 UK / 21:00 CET
Venue: Estadio Santiago Bernabeu (Madrid).
The previous two Champions League winners will meet each other in the replay of the last season’s quarterfinal tie exactly one year later.
Current holders Real Madrid will host Chelsea in the first leg of their quarterfinal tie on Wednesday evening at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.
Both teams will put the entire focus to the Champions League success following their wobbly domestic league campaigns.
Los Blancos officially have up the title quest in La Liga on Saturday evening by falling 2-3 at home to Villarreal.
Carlo Ancelotti’s men thus left Barcelona with a chance to further increase their double-digit gap at the top of the league standings.
Nevertheless, we must not forget that Real Madrid have annihilated their bitter Spanish rivals in the rematch of the Copa del Rey semifinal last week as a 0-4 drubbing of Barcelona at Spotify Camp Nou has booked Madrid’s final against Osasuna in May.
While Madrid will at least be in contention for the cup trophy, Chelsea are not anywhere near the title battle in England.
The Blues are out of all domestic cup competition and they have just dropped out of the top half of the Premier League standings after failing to find the back of the net in three consecutive league outings.
Frank Lampard did not quite enjoy his return to Chelsea’s bench as the Blues did not impress at all on Saturday afternoon in a 1-0 defeat at Wolves.
Chelsea have not been pulling up any trees since the start of the year. The new manager bounce did not go well in the weekend’s game against Wolves and we can hardly see the visitors causing any problems to Carlo Ancelotti and his troops on Wednesday.
Real Madrid have shown strength in the recent Copa del Rey demolition of Barcelona. We will take the home win at the 1.70 odds, while also being very much interested in backing Karim Benzema to score the first goal of the game at the sky-high 4.00 odds. The French forward has completed back-to-back hat-tricks in the wins over Valladolid and Barcelona of late.
