Athletic Bilabo enjoyed a fantastic campaign last season. They secured the first top-four finish in the last 11 years, boasting the joint-highest-ever points tally at the end of the season.

They also reached the UEFA Europa League semi-final where they were denied the presence in the final on the home patch by the elimination at the hands of Manchester United.

Ernesto Valverde will go into the season with high ambitions once again following the team’s success in retaining their main star Nico Williams who extended his contract despite the ever-present talks about a move to Barcelona.

The story is completely opposite with Sevilla who finished last year in 17th position, just a single point above the red zone.

They haven’t done much in the transfer window ahead of the new campaign either and it is very difficult to see new manager Matias Almeyda returning them to the old heights this time around.

Other than Athletic’s preseason form, there is a lot to like about the home win here.

Bilbao won three and drew one of the previous four head-to-head matches against Sevilla. They also had a fabulous home record with 11 wins, 6 draws, and only 2 defeats in 19 league fixtures in their own backyard last term.

Tougher rivals in preseason caused a run of five straight losses but the fact that Bilbao tested themselves against the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal bodes well ahead of the clash with a much weaker side in the likes of Sevilla.

The visitors did not shine in the preseason either, drawing to the likes of Al Qadisiya and Toulouse in the last two games.
