Portugal will be seeking a third-round shock on Tuesday when they take on the main title contenders United States in the final match of the group stage.

The team led by Francisco Neto got off to a wrong-footed start in what could easily prove out to be a decisive match in a 0-1 defeat to the Netherlands on the opening day.

They did bounce back with a great display in a 2-0 win over Vietnam in Round 2 but that victory will count for little if they fail to beat the United States on Tuesday.

USA had to fight for a 1-1 draw in the second round against the Netherlands and they are yet to confirm the qualification for the knockout phase.

A defeat here could be fatal for the back-to-back defending champions and the most successful team in the history of the World Cup.

Vlatko Andonovski’s troops will thus feel bug pressure on Tuesday which is something the Portuguese outfit may potentially take advantage of.

The USWNT did not shine offensively in either of the opening two outings, at least not in contrast to what they had done in the previous editions of the tournament.

The American manager can, however, be satisfied with his side’s defensive showings because the United States have conceded only two goals in the last ten matches.

On Thursday, they allowed a goal from the Dutch lone shot on target in the 90 minutes of play. Knowing that Portugal do not possess immense firepower on display in the final third, we do fancy the United States to keep their net untouched in this one.
