Roberto Martinez will make his debut on Portugal’s bench on Thursday evening when Group J favorites play host to one of the weakest teams on the continent in what should be as one-sided affair as possible at Estadio Jose Alvalade.
Portugal are huge favorites in the group with Slovakia, Iceland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Luxembourg, and Liechtenstein and it would take a miracle for Martinez’s troops not to claim the top spot.
They have suffered a surprising 1-0 defeat at the hands of Morocco in the World Cup quarterfinal in December last year and this will also be their maiden game since that defeat.
There are no doubts the players will be highly motivated to impress the new manager. Cristiano Ronaldo should lead the line from the first minute and the only question is how many goals he and his teammates will put past the continent’s minnows here.
Liechtenstein will travel to Portugal on a run of 13 consecutive defeats across competitions. They have scored just a single goal in the process and it is very hard to believe they can cause any problems to Portugal’s net on Thursday.
The difference in quality between these two teams is enormous and we expect the hosts to remove all doubts about the potential winner in the opening minutes of the game. Looking at the odds, we are particularly interested in backing Portugal to win the first half in -2.5 Asian Handicap at the price tag of 2.20.
