Melbourne Rectangular Stadium will host a very interesting Group B matchup between Nigeria and Canada on Friday.
This is a huge match for both teams in a beautifully-shaped group. Australia and Canada pop up as the main contenders to advance but the likes of Nigeria and Ireland certainly have what it takes to make their jobs tougher along the way.
Both Nigeria and Canada have come to Australia in horrendous spirits following the disputes with their respective federations.
Both teams have called out the representatives for the lack of funds available for women’s football and sport in general.
Nevertheless, these things can sometimes only serve as an additional bond among the players and it will be very interesting to see how the outfits will react in the first game at the tournament.
Nigeria have featured in every single Women’s FIFA World Cup while Canada have missed only one so far.
The Super Falcons have shown great form this year, celebrating three successive wins in the build-up to the competition. The latest came in April when Nigeria saw off co-hosts New Zealand 0-3 on the road.
Canada have faced much more serious opposition in their pre-World Cup friendlies. They lost three of four matches this year but these defeats have come to the likes of the United States, Japan, and France.
It is worth noting that Canada have dispatched the likes of Brazil 0-2 in the process. Canada have one of the best right-backs on the planet in their ranks in the like of Ashley Lawrence who has just made a move to Chelsea.
