Newcastle vs Liverpool
English Premier League
Date: 27 August 2023, Sunday
Kick-off at 16:30 UK / 17:30 CET
Venue: St. James’ Park (Newcastle upon Tyne).
Newcastle and Liverpool will drop the curtain on Matchday No 3 on Sunday afternoon with a mouth-watering clash at St. James’ Park.
The Magpies will thus continue their difficult schedule at the start of the season, following the games against Aston Villa and Manchester City in the opening two rounds.
While Eddie Howe’s troops destroyed Villa on the opening day by netting five goals in a demolishing win on the home patch, they failed to threaten the reigning champions in the final third eight days ago at Etihad Stadium.
One shot on goal in the 90 minutes of play in Manchester (and also it came only after Rodri’s surprising mistake) was not good enough for a result against the Citizens.
The back line, however, looked great in that match as Sven Botman and Fabian Schar completely controlled Erling Haaland, keeping the Norwegian superstar scoreless on the occasion.
It is odd to see Newcastle as the odds-on favorites to beat Liverpool but we must agree with the bookmakers here, especially knowing about the Magpies’ amazing home record in the previous term of the Premier League and the whole St. James’ Park effect.
Also, Liverpool did not impress at all in their inaugural two displays. They only played a 1-1 draw to Chelsea on the opening day at Stamford Bridge before beating Bournemouth 3-1 last weekend at the Anfield.
Nevertheless, both matches revealed plenty of defensive holes in Jurgen Klopp’s defensive line. The likes of Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson will know how to exploit these in an electric atmosphere of the St. James’ Park.
Newcastle’s impressive attacking line should have too much for Liverpool’s leaky defense here and the home win is the way to go at the 2.15 odds.
We also like the 2.50 odds offered for Alexander Isak to score anytime on Sunday, expecting the in-form Swedish striker to get the nod from in the starting XI once again after scoring a brace on the opening day against Villa.
