Steffen Schmidt - May 16, 2023
Newcastle vs Brighton
English Premier League
Date: 18 May 2023, Thursday
Kick-off at 19:30 UK / 20:30 CET
Venue: St. James’ Park (Newcastle upon Tyne).
Newcastle host Brighton in the postponed game of Matchday No 25 on Thursday evening at St. James’ Park.
The outfits will go into the tie in opposite spirits following the weekend’s results but the bookmakers still consider the hosts pretty big favorites despite their two-game winless thread.
The Magpies continued with their suspect defensive showings on Saturday afternoon when they allowed two goals in an away stalemate against the relegation-threatened Leeds in the first match of Gameweek No 36.
Newcastle have thus conceded two goals in each of the last two Premier League outings and they are no longer alone at the top of the league’s defensive charts.
Eddie Howe’s men still have the pole position in the battle for the top-four finish, sitting four points above Liverpool in fifth place and eight points above Brighton in sixth. The Seagulls do have a game in hand, though.
Brighton will enter this on the back of one of their best performances of the season in a 0-3 thumping of title hopefuls Arsenal on Sunday afternoon at the Emirates.
Roberto De Zerbi’s men played an extraordinary game, not allowing the Gunners too many chances at all in North London.
Such a display came out of nowhere after a 1-5 home defeat at the hands of relegation strugglers Everton.
The Seagulls now have three wins in the last four Premier League outings. Can they keep this form going and get a result at St. James’ Park?
St. James’ Park is one of the toughest places to conquer in English top flight. Newcastle won 10, drew 5, and lost just 2 of 17 league fixtures in their own backyard. With this in mind, we have to fancy the home win pick at the 2.00 odds.
Brighton are enjoying a wonderful campaign in this term of the Premier League but De Zerbi is dealing with plenty of injury issues in a congested schedule with all the postponed fixtures. We also see the value in the Under 2.5 goals FT bet at the 2.30 odds.
