Peter Green - June 20, 2019
Morocco vs Namibia
Africa Cup of Nations
Date: Sunday, 23 June 2019
Kick off at 15:30 UK / 16:30 CET
Venue: Al Salam Stadium (Cairo).
With the Africa Cup of Nations kicking off this weekend, all eyes will be turning to Egypt where the twenty-four finalists will be competing for the coveted trophy this year.
Morocco will be coming into the tournament, having lost their most recent friendly against Zambia in a five-match thriller which ended 3-2. They will be hoping to get off to a much needed winning start to their campaign when they take on their opening opponents Namibia, at the Al Salam Stadium in Cairo on Sunday.
The latter on the other hand will be heading into the clash on a much more positive note. Their previous international friendly saw them edging past Ghana by a goal to nil. It will not be a walk in the park for them however, as their counterparts have always produced much better performances at the big stage.
Following their opening clash, Herve Renard’s side will be squaring up against Ivory Coast while their counterparts are scheduled to face South Africa.
The opening clash for the two teams on Sunday is likely to see Morocco come out on top. Although they have been far from impressive in their last three outings, the Moroccans are certain to be a lot more exuberant and lot less wasteful heading into the Cup.
Ajax winger Hakim Ziyech scored the only two goals for his team in their 3-2 defeat to the Zambians and will be hoping to open his account right from the opening clash. Having found the back of the net in both halves, he is definitely an imminent threat that needs to be marked throughout the ninety minutes.
Ricardo Mannetti’s side are currently on a two-match unbeaten streak, securing a 3-0 win over Seychelles and 1-0 win over Ghana. His team have certainly been consistent in finding the back of the net. Hence, you can definitely count on them to repeat the same in their opening group clash.
Nevertheless, it looks more likely that Herve Renard’s men will possibly be on top at the break and at the last whistle. You can expect Namibia to open their campaign with a defeat in hand.
