Steffen Schmidt - August 14, 2023
Manchester City vs Sevilla
UEFA Super Cup
Date: 16 August 2023, Wednesday
Kick-off at 20:00 UK / 21:00 CET
Venue: Stadio Georgios Karaiskaki (Piraeus).
Ten days after a penalty-shootout loss to Arsenal in the battle for the first trophy of the 2023/24 season, Manchester City will get another chance to grab early silverware.
They meet perennial Europa League winners Sevilla on Wednesday night in quest for the UEFA Super Cup trophy at Stadio Georgios Karaiskaki in Piraeus (the home of Olympiacos).
This is the trophy the Citizens do not have in their already wealthy cabinet and there are no doubts Pep Guardiola’s machinery will be highly motivated to get the victory on Wednesday.
The Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League winners enter the tie as massive favorites, especially after the performances both teams have shown at the beginning of the new season.
Man City eased past Vincent Kompany’s Burnley, beating the top flight newcomers 0-3 on Friday night at Turf Moor.
Erling Haaland, who bagged 12 Champions League goals last year for the Citizens, opened the new domestic campaign with a brace against Clarets.
He should have plenty of room to deliver the goods here against Sevilla whose back line looked leaky five days ago, allowing two goals in a surprising home defeat to Valencia on the opening day of the 2023/24 La Liga campaign.
Sevilla looked toothless in the final third in the opening game of the new season against Valencia and they haven’t quite thrived up front in preseason friendlies either.
We like Man City to win to nil at the 2.20 odd while Erling Haaland to score anytime is always a smart betting option. This time, it is priced at the 1.72 odds.
