Manchester City vs Newcastle Prediction & Match Preview

Steffen Schmidt - August 17, 2023

Manchester City vs Newcastle
English Premier League
Date: 19 August 2023, Saturday
Kick-off at 19:00 UK / 20:00 CET
Venue: Etihad Stadium (Manchester).

Manchester City host Newcastle on Saturday evening at Etihad Stadium as two top-four teams come across each other in a staggering second round matchup.

Both outfits looked beyond impressive on the opening day, Newcastle in particular. The Magpies produced a scintillating performance in a 5-1 statement victory over another European contender Aston Villa at St. James’ Park.

Alexander Isak completed a brace, debutants Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes added their names to the scoresheet (the latter as a late sub), while the remaining goal came through Callum Wilson.

Man City cruised past newly-promoted Burnley 0-3 as Erling Haaland came up with a first-half show at Turf Moor, completing a brace of his own against Vincent Kompany’s Clarets.

With both outfits firing on all cylinders in the final third early in the new campaign, we can by all means expect a very entertaining affair with stunning rhythm and plenty of chances at both ends.

Despite a clean sheet, Pep Guardiola’s defensive line did not look as solid as ever, allowing Burnley several open looks last Friday.

Also, it is worth noting that the Citizens failed to keep things quiet at the back in any of four preseason matches this summer, including the Community Shield loss on penalties to Arsenal two weeks ago.

Manchester City vs Newcastle Head-to-head

  • Manchester City go into this on the back of seven wins and a draw in the last eight meetings with the Magpies.
  • Newcastle, however, kept the Citizens to a 3-3 draw in the last season’s clash at St. James’ Park (also early in the season).
  • Four or more goals were scored in four of the previous five head to head affairs between these rivals.

Manchester City vs Newcastle Prediction

Manchester City will be without Kevin De Bruyne for at least four months following his early exit through injury at Turf Moor. They also had a European trip to make in midweek for the UEFA Super Cup clash against Sevilla.

We will thus skip the home win pick, as good as the Citizens have been on the home patch last season. Instead, the Over 2.5 goals FT & Both Teams To Score seems as a much more convenient betting option at the 2.10 odds. Alternatively, we like Erling Haaland to score anytime for the Citizens at the 1.90 odds.

Manchester City vs Newcastle Betting Tips

  • Over 2.5 goals FT & Both Teams To Score @ 2.10 (11/10)
  • Erling Haaland to score anytime @ 1.90 (9/10) odd.
