Manchester City vs Marseille
UEFA Champions League
Date: Wednesday, 9 December 2020
Kick-off at 20:00 UK/ 21:00 CET
Venue: Etihad Stadium.
The Citizens have already ensured that they will end up champions of the group. The second-placed Porto are trailing by three points, and even if they win against Olympiacos and Pep Guardiola’s men lose at the Etihad – the standings won’t change, due to the h2h superiority of the English club.
Likely, it’s expected that Pep might rest some of his key players, considering the rigorous schedule in the PL.
Meanwhile, the Phocaeans are placed dead last in the table, and have just three points against their name. However, the third-placed Olympiacos also have just three points on the board, and this makes the race for the sole Europa League spot wide open.
As such, Andre Villas-Boas’s men will target a win this Wednesday.
Still, the Citizens are one of the best teams in Europe, and even with their bench squad, they would be miles ahead in terms of quality. They also do have a great h2h record against this opponent, and they have the luxury to play relaxed against the under-pressure Phocaeans.
As such, expect Manchester City to post the win at the Etihad.
The Phocaeans won 2-1 at home against Olympiacos the last match-day in the competition. In the meantime, the Citizens were held to a 0-0 draw on the road by Porto.
Going on, Villas-Boas’s men are from the comparatively weaker French Ligue 1, and had lost four of their previous nine games. They were also winless in eight of their former fourteen overall matches, and remained so in three of their past six road trips.
On the other hand, their counterparts were unbeaten in 13 of their last 14 overall match-ups, and they had won five of their last six home appearances as well.
On top of that, Pep’s men also have a 100% winning record in h2h clashes, and since Villas-Boas’s men are under huge pressure to win, the hosts will find it easy to take advantage of the spaces left behind.
Likely, expect a comfortable Manchester City win.
