LASK will begin their 2023/24 European adventure on Thursday evening with the home clash against Bosnian champions Zrinjski Mostar in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League playoffs.

The Austrian champions did not get off to the best possible start to the new season in the domestic league, claiming just one win in the inaugural four rounds of the competition.

It came in the team’s previous home clash (2-0) in a small city derby against BW Linz. Head coach Thomas Sageder can’t be thrilled with his side’s defensive form at the start of the season as LASK kept just one clean sheet in four outings this summer.

LASK played the group stages of European competitions in three consecutive years before missing out from Europe completely last year.

Their players have much more experience in this type of games than those wearing Zrinjski’s shirt.

That said, Zrinjski Mostar will become the inaugural Bosnian team to qualify for the group phases of any European competition.

They’ve earned this right by beating Breidablik in the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round courtesy of a 6-2 demolition of the Icelandic champions in the first leg on the home patch in Mostar.

The back-to-back Bosnian champions have only played their first domestic league game of the season (after postponing matches from the first three rounds of the new season due to European duties) on Sunday, beating newly-promoted GOSK Gabela 3-1 at Stadion Bijeli Brijeg.

Zrinjski have not kept a clean sheet in six straight games in all competitions, including the Bosnian Premijer Liga season opener against GOSK on Sunday. LASK also look better offensively than defensively at the start of the new season which is why we expect a high-scoring scenario on Thursday in Linz.
