Iceland vs Switzerland
UEFA Nations League
Date: Monday, 15th October 2018
Kick-off at 19:45 UK/ 20:45 CET
Venue: Laugardalsvollur (Reykjavík).
Iceland are going into a downward spiral and things look bad on them after starting the UEFA Nations League campaign with back-to-back heavy defeats.
They will be hosting Switzerland this Monday, the team that handed them a 0-6 defeat on opening day as well as their heaviest defeat in 17 years. Iceland’s second group game resulted in a 0-3 defeat at home to Belgium.
Erik Hamren and the boys showed some positives in the 2-2 draw against World Champions last week, still they are way behind their usual class after conceding 2 late goals in the match.
Switzerland lost 1-2 to Belgium on Saturday and now chase the top position in the group from a three point gap.
The Red Crosses have now lost their last three games outside their home soil, this includes 1-0 defeat against England in a friendly and 1-0 loss to Sweden in the World Cup round of 16.
Still, Switzerland have the recent history of doing well in qualifiers and they are expected to raise their game at Reykjavík this Monday.
It is often exciting to watch this Iceland football team and it goes to a whole different level when the chanting home fans fill the stadium.
However they are in a bad patch and despite a positive draw against France last week, their defensive vulnerabilities were exposed to the maximum.
Iceland will be relegated from the group with anything less than a win against Switzerland this week.
It is a must win game for Switzerland after the 2-1 loss to Belgium on Saturday.
The Swiss side boast a good record in qualifying tournaments and it is often difficult to score goals against. Thus Iceland could go down deep in to relegation waters with a defeat this Monday.
