Peter Green - October 8, 2019
Iceland vs France
EURO 2020 – Qualification
Date: Friday, 11 October 2019
Kick-off at 19:45 UK/ 20:45 CET
Venue: Laugardalsvöllur (Reykjavík).
Group H is getting trickier by the day. At the start of the campaign, everyone expected that France and Turkey would wrap up their objectives halfway through the run. But, at present, Iceland holds good prospects to qualify if they are able to cause an upset against just one of the top two. As such, this game against the French has a lot of potential. And with the home advantage to back them, Erik Hamren’s men will present the toughest of fights to the world champions.
France could have topped the group easily, but their loss against Turkey affected them quite bad. As of now, they are in the second position. And with just four more matches to go, coupled with the presence of Iceland just a spot below, the pressure is slowly mounting.
The world conquerors will be without the service of their captain and goalkeeper, Hugo Lloris, who’s expected to miss a major chunk of his season due to an injury. Add to this the absence of Paul Pogba and Kylian Mbappe as well. Still, the team does have enough firepower in their roster to overcome this challenge.
While the hosts will be desperate to cause an upset this Friday, which will put them in a prime spot to get qualified, the French will be aware of this potential threat and will act cautiously. They will try to put down any chance of resistance by the hosts early itself, and will not allow themselves to be bullied at the closing minutes of the tie.
As such, we can count on the phenomenal attacking line of the visitors to show up, and get the job done and dusted. While Iceland does have some good performances to draw confidence from, against the vastly experienced and hugely talented lineup of the guests, they are expected to fail.
