Haiti and Qatar will lock horns in a super-important Group B opener on Sunday afternoon at NRK Stadium in Houston, Texas.
Haiti are hoping to improve on their previous term’s record when they failed to find a way out of the group stage despite showing some impressive displays at the tournament (including a 1-0 defeat to the latter champions USA).
Les Grenadiers have arrived to the United States in the highest of spirits after a stellar campaign in the League B of the CONCACAF Nations League.
They have won five games on the spin while scoring at least three goals in each of them along the way.
The team led by Spanish manager Gabriel Calderon Pellegrino are about to face a much tougher opposition at this tournament, though.
However, they will hope that positive momentum can carry them to success against Qatar who will enter this tournament low on confidence after a poor campaign at the 2022 World Cup as a host nation.
Qatar did manage to beat Jamaica in a friendly played ten days ago (2-1) but they have fallen 0-1 to New Zealand in the final test before the Gold Cup.
All eyes will be on Almoez Ali who has 42 goals in 88 appearances for the national team. Nevertheless, we did not see enough from this Qatari team in the last year to grant their success at the 2023 Gold Cup.
Neither team can afford a defeat here with the likes of Mexico and Honduras in the same group. We expect a careful approach by both managers, meaning the Under 2.5 goals FT should be the way to go from the betting perspective at the 1.75 odds.
Alternatively, we like the 1.80 odds offered for Haiti to win or draw knowing Qatar have only managed to claim two wins in the last nine games they played in all competitions (mainly friendlies).
