Aberdeen return to European football on Thursday night when they start their adventures in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League playoffs against Hacken away on Swedish soil.

Both teams will feature in the group phase of a continental competition for the first time in their history regardless of what happens in this tie (the losing team gets to advance to the Conference League groups).

Hacken should go into this as the form favorites after clinching four wins on the spin. They have cruised past Lithuanian side Zalgiris 8-1 on aggregate in the third qualifying round of Europa League after suffering a shocking Champions League elimination at the hands of Faroese side KI Klaksvik.

Hacken have also claimed their third straight Allsvenskan victory on Sunday thanks to a late stoppage-time own goal in the clash against Sirius (3-2).

They are one point behind Elfsborg at the top of the domestic league table after 20 rounds of the competition.

Aberdeen, on the other side, picked up a 1-2 road win over lower-division Stirling Albion in the second round of the Scottish League Cup on Friday with their star striker Bojan Miovski opening the scoreline on the occasion.

They claimed just one point in the inaugural two rounds of the new season in the Scottish Premiership, though, losing 1-3 at home to champions Celtic in the previous round eleven days ago.
