Global Sports Betting Legislation Updates in 2024

Aron Wright - December 11, 2024

Opinions on sports betting vary in every country of the world: in some regions betting is a controversial topic, in others it is a legal entertainment and a source of income for the national budget. In addition, anyone can make predictions on all types of matches: all it takes is attention to detail and commitment to a certain sporting discipline. If you are a sports fan and at least once made a bet on your favorite team – read further to learn more about match predictions for upcoming matches.

USA

Even though no new states allowed sports betting this year, many of them still attempted to pass legislation – South Carolina, Missouri, Oklahoma and Georgia.

Minnesota took a step to legalize sports betting by introducing two sponsored bills – one of them would make wagering legit with a 20% tax rate, while the second option would require 40% tax on bets, with the goal of directing as much of the revenue as possible for dealing with gambling issues.

College Prop Bets were banned by a few states, such as Louisiana, Ohio and Maryland. This happened after the president of NCAA, Charlie Baker stated how these types of bets often lead to professional athletes’ harassment and threaten the integrity of competition. This led to lots of advertisement restrictions and made the policymakers question collegiate betting in general.

Europe

In 2024, Ireland passed a new Anti-money Laundering project under The Gambling Regulation Act. Now it is considered as the most significant reform of betting legislation throughout the year – it is intended for quick reports on suspicious transactions. The country allowed a new licensing regime as well.

Belgium also decided to ensure stricter supervision on betting operators. In September, the Belgian government finally standardized the minimum age of 21 for the country residents to access sports wagering (and other games of chance) and prohibited using a combination of a few licenses for online platforms. Furthermore, F1 and F1+ license holders cannot organise ‘virtual betting’ activities.

Asia

New government of Thailand decided to work on a plan for betting legislation. While most of the gambling forms are still illegal in the country, there are state-controlled horse racing permitted. Needless to mention the popularity of betting on soccer and other underground gaming activities.

During the public hearing about creating entertainment regulations and legalising casinos effectively, 80% of the participants agreed that the country needs clear rules for gambling operators. Through all this time, all similar bills were never able to be put into use, since the Thai government was criticized by conservatives. Now the country is on its way to creating a huge entertainment complex and making one of the promising fields legit.

As we can see, more countries and regions put effort into creating a safe space for bettors and the bookmakers, giving them more opportunities for clear, legal activity. This year, some of the countries took revolutionary steps that will help them to open hundreds of new jobs and provide one of today’s most in-demand areas with a chance to grow.
