Peter Green - October 22, 2019
Getafe vs Basel
Europa League
Date: Thursday, 24 October 2019
Kick-off at 20:00 UK/ 21:00 CET
Venue: Coliseum Alfonso Perez (Getafe).
These two are the toppers of Group C, and either has posted impressive leads over the other two squads in the roster. That being so, the victor of this upcoming battle will have practically one leg in the next round of the competition. It’s a fairly tempting prospect, and both sides will in all probability go after the three points.
The fact that the home advantage sides with Getafe, who has posted a 100% win record so far, improve their chances for the win. Moreover, they also do have the confidence of plying their trade in one of the best two leagues in the world, as opposed to the Swiss Super League, that Basel is a part of.
Getafe’s lone meeting with a football team from Switzerland came in the 2010 Europa group phase against BSC Young Boys; won 1-0 at home and lost 0-2 away.
Meantime, Basel have plenty of experience playing against LaLiga. There has been 18 such previous meetings, however the Swiss side lost 11 of those, while managing 2 wins and 5 draws. They are win-less in Spanish soil and return a record of 2 draws and 7 losses.
These two are surely the best units in the group, and they have proved it with their performances over the other teams in the cluster. For that reason, the race for the top-most spot is on, which will provide a comparatively easier fixture in the next round.
The home advantage plays into the favor of the Spaniards. They have remained unbeaten in 18 of their former 20 appearances in front of the home crowd, and stirringly, had a six-match winning run in the midst of this stretch.
Moreover, in 2019, only thrice have the cavalry lost in front of the home crowd, and two of these had come against Barcelona.
At present, they are on a three-tie winning streak and have scored twice or more in five of their former six fixtures. In addition, they have lost just twice this whole season – once against the Blaugrana, and once against Atleti.
On the other hand, Marcel Koller’s men, in spite of the form they put forth in the domestic circuit, are no match for a top prospect from the Spanish League, and that too on the road. Furthermore, they are winless in their preceding three road games, and also their sole match-up away from home in the competition ended in a draw.
By the looks of it, we are in line for a dominating win by Jose Bordalas’s men.
