Germany took the maximum six points from the opening two World Cup Qualification games against the main two challengers Iceland and Romania. They have done so without conceding a single goal along the way, helping the outgoing manager Joachim Low feel much better after the humiliating 6-0 defeat to Spain at the end of the team’s UEFA Nations League run last November.
While Die Mannschaft looked super-impressive in the 3-0 thumping of Iceland in the opening fixture, they were lucky to have come away with the spoils from the weekend’s away game against Romania.
Serge Gnabry’s 16th-minute goal eventually made the difference, although we have to mention that the Romanians missed several high-profile chances on the occasion. A win here against the Macedonians would represent an enormous step for Low and his troops en route to securing the top spot in Group J, with the fixtures against Liechtenstein and Armenia upcoming in September.
The two sides did not have the opportunity to lock horns in the past.
North Macedonia will feature their first major tournament this summer as they took advantage of the UEFA Nations League play-offs to qualify for the EURO 2021. The Red Lynxes have enjoyed a positive atmosphere ever since the historical 0-1 victory over Georgia in November last year (in the play-offs final). They have thus put up a couple of exciting performances at the start of the World Cup Qualifications. Igor Angelovski’s men fell just short in Romania where they conceded an 85th-minute goal to lose the match despite scoring two goals in Bucharest.
The Macedonians then run riot in the 5-0 drubbing of the group underdogs Liechtenstein on Sunday. They notched four second-half goals on the occasion. Germany are clear favourites here, but we would not be shocked to see the visitors on the scoreline based on everything we’ve seen in the last seven days.
