Finland vs Greece
EURO Qualification
Date: Thursday, 5 September 2019
Kick-off at 19:45 UK / 20:45 CET
Venue: Ratina Stadion (Tampere).
Finland have been a passive nation in the international football scenario, having never made it to the finals of either the World Cup or the Euro. However, things have started to look up for the Finnish outfit. The squad defied quite a few odds in the Nations League last year, and have already booked a berth in the playoffs, should they fail to make it through the qualifiers.
However, the hosts have been on a good run so far, with their only defeat coming against none other the current table-toppers Italy. They are also sporting a formidable three-match winning streak under their belt at the moment, and have netted six goals in the process while conceding none.
Greece, on the other hand, have been disappointing in their clashes building up to this tie and have managed to bag a win just once in their last five games. It also needs mentioning that the visitors have been admitting defeat in their previous two fixtures in a row, the last of which saw them beaten by Armenia with a 3-2 scoreline, that too on home soil.
Taking the aforementioned into consideration, Finland are certainly the favorites to come out on top this Thursday.
Markku Kanerva’s men are making a name for themselves on the global stage, and have so far stumbled just once in their last four qualifying matches. Furthermore, the fact that they have slotted six unanswered goals into the back of the net from their previous three games alone, is in itself an indication of their superiority.
The visitors have been a dismal bunch in their trips on the road and have been at the losing end in their last two outings in a running. To make matters worse, Greece have never got the better of their foes in their previous visits to this stadium, and have lost four times in their last seven meetings here.
Given that Finland’s main man upfront, Teemu Pukki, is also on a goal-scoring spree at the moment, the chances of the away side salvaging even a point from this matchup is definitely looking bleak.
The last fixture between the two sides here saw Finland win with a 2-0 scoreline. Considering that the hosts have also been wrapping things up with less than 2.5 goals on the charts in their last three games in a row, we can expect Finland to repeat the same as Greece look far from likely to cause any trouble to the hosts in the final third.
