Belgium, Ukraine, Romania, and Slovakia make up Group E, one of the more open Euro 2024 groups.
Belgium are heavily favoured to top the group after another solid qualifying campaign winning 6 and drawing 2 in 8 qualifying games, but they must prove doubters wrong having scored a single goal at the last FIFA World Cup in Qatar when they were knocked out at the group stage.
The fight for a second-place finish and possible upsets promise excitement as Ukraine and Slovakia look equally dangerous.
Belgium are overwhelming favourite to top this group despite recent struggles, they are blessed with a talented squad. Though considered aging, with many players on the wrong side of 30, like Kevin De Bruyne, Jan Vertonghen, and Romelu Lukaku. Domenico Tedesco, has called up some younger players, signaling a new direction for the team.
However, their recent performances have led to some doubts about their ability to dominate the group. Despite their experience, the team has struggled recently, failing to advance beyond the group stage at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and losing to Italy in the quarterfinals at Euro 2020.
Prediction: Considering their recent form and strengths, Belgium is expected to top the group, but they must be wary of a motivated Ukraine and Romania.
Capable of causing upsets and making a deep run in the competition. Ukraine will be out to make a firm statement in this competition and Group E, counting on the quality of their squad and possession-based style of play. This is evident in their qualifying and playoffs, as they showed resilience and determination.
The team will be counting on stars such as Andriy Yarmolenko, Roman Yaremchuk, and Oleksandr Zinchenko, who bring a wealth of experience. Head Coach Serhiy Rebrov has instilled into this team a strong attacking mentality, evident in their cohesive displays.
Their form has been impressive, with notable wins in the playoffs. Their style of play is their strong point, characterized by swift counter-attacks, clever possession of football, and ultimately a solid defense.
Prediction: Considering their recent form and strengths, Ukraine is likely to finish second in Group E, behind Belgium. They will outclass Slovakia and Romania with their quality team and style of play.
Slovakia’s young squad will be out to make a statement in Euro 2024 Group E, building on their impressive campaign during the qualification series. Their form has been promising, with a string of solid performances in qualifying and recent friendlies.
High pressing, quick transitions, and clever movement characterized the style of play of this promising team, causing trouble for opponents. They are also well-organized, with a strong defensive foundation and swift counter-attacks.
Prediction: Considering their recent form and strengths, Slovakia is likely to finish third in Group E, behind Belgium and Ukraine, but ahead of Romania. While they may not advance to the knockout rounds, their young squad will definitely gain valuable experience and make a statement in the competition.
Despite their impressive qualification run, Romania’s squad quality is not on par with their Group E opponents. Their recent form has been inconsistent, which makes their Euro 2024 campaign an uphill battle.
Manager Edward Iordănescu prioritizes a style of play centered on quick counter-attacks and physicality, but they often struggle against possession-based teams like the ones in their group.
Their tactical strength lies in their ability to absorb pressure and hit opposition on the counter, which could be a major concern, but this approach may not be enough against stronger opponents.
Prediction: Considering their recent form and strengths, Romania is likely to finish last in Group E, behind Belgium, Ukraine, and Slovakia. While they are capable of causing upsets, their overall quality and consistency will possibly stop them from progressing to the knockout rounds.
Belgium vs. Ukraine:
This round 3 clash could decide the winner and second-placed team in group E. It promises to be a key battle between the experienced Red Devils and the Attacking prowess of Ukraine.
Romania vs. Slovakia:
It’s a battle between two disciplined sides with both teams aiming for a positive end to their group stage games. We expect this game to end in a draw since both sides have drawn their last 3 International friendly meetings.
Group E will be interesting to watch. Belgium is the favorite, but Ukraine will definitely give them a fight. Romania and Slovakia won’t come easy, as they are capable of causing upsets. Anticipate a group stage with close matchups and a fight for every available point.
