Peter Green - June 24, 2019
Egypt vs DR Congo
Africa Cup of Nations
Date: Wednesday, 26 June 2019
Kick off at 21:00 UK / 22:00 CET
Venue: Cairo International Stadium (Cairo).
The hosts managed to taste victory in their opening clash against Zimbabwe, albeit by a slender margin. Trezeguet powered them into the lead five minutes from the interval, after controlling the ball in the penalty with a neat first touch before cutting inside and slotting the ball into the back of the net. The Egyptians managed sixteen attempts at goal but were thwarted on most occasions by some brilliant saves from Zimbabwe’s man between the sticks, Edmore Sibanda.
Their opponents for Wednesday, DR Congo, put on a very poor performance, to say the least, in the latter’s opening fixture against Uganda. Despite managing slightly better possession on the ball, and attempting eight times at goal, they just could not find the back of the net at least once in the ninety minutes. The squad will need to track the dangerous runs of Mo Salah along the flanks as well as be a lot more lethal when it comes to their attacking third if they are to salvage their hopes of making it past the group stage.
Following their clash, the Pharaohs will be facing Uganda while their counterparts will be squaring up against Zimbabwe.
DR Congo are almost certain to slump to their second successive defeat in their Africa Cup of Nations campaign when they take on the hosts Egypt. The latter are currently impressing in all competitions, and are without a loss in any of their last three fixtures. Javier Aguirre’s men are one of the strongest sides in the tournament and will be looking to finish the group stages without a loss.
Florent Ibenge’s squad have not been able to deliver a convincing performance in any of their last five matches, and have just one win in the same. They have also failed to keep a clean sheet in two of their last three matches.
So we can definitely count on the Egyptians to break the deadlock as well as slot a couple more down their opponents end. The team have recorded two clean sheets in their last three matches, so a clean sheet against Ibenge’s side will be a safe bet as well.
