Derry City’s 7-game unbeaten run came to an end at Finn Park, where the Harps recorded much needed win in relegation battle. Their objective is still the same, though – 3rd place which brings European Football.
As I’m writing this, they’re 5th behind Bohemians with a game in hand. Despite a decent run, they failed to deliver against relegation candidates, UCD (0-0 at home) and Finn Harps, and they need to improve going forward before it’s too late.
Waterford, on the other hand, just recorded a massive win over UCD away from home, which brings them to 7th place and now they are seven points ahead of Finn Harps, who’s sitting at 9th (relegation Play Off spot), and also have three games in hand. They were really unlucky against Bohs, completely outplayed Sligo, but only got a point from these two games, so they needed this big time.
Four of the last five meetings ended with over 2.5 goals and we have seen BTTS – YES in last 3 meetings.
Historically, draws are very uncommon (only 5 out of 33 games didn’t produce a winner).
They already played 2 thrillers this season – Waterford snatched a point after last minute goal back in April (2-2), while Derry won the last game at this venue (3-2), in February.
Derry will look for a strong reaction after unexpected loss, and their decent home record (6-3-3) should boost up their confidence, as well as their goals scored per game ratio (1.67). Only table toppers, Dundalk and Shamrock are more efficient at home.
Waterford can play without a pressure now. Tonight’s win should lift their spirits up. They’re not a goal-scoring machine away from home (1.08 goals per game), but they have proven to be a tough matchup for Derry. Their poor defensive record (1.67) also supports my picks – goals.
