Cremonese vs Lecce
Italian Serie A
Date: 4 February 2023, Saturday
Kick-off at 14:00 UK / 15:00 CET
Venue: Stadio Giovanni Zini (Cremona).
Lecce suffered back-to-back defeats in important bottom-half clashes against Hellas Verona and Salernitana in the previous two rounds.
They will desperately want to avoid the third such defeat on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Stadio Giovanni Zini to tackle last season’s Serie B rivals Cremonese in Matchday No 21.
A potential defeat here would significantly complicate Lecce’s situation down in the relegation scrap. The visitors are still on a healthy seven-point distance from the red zone.
Nonetheless, with the fixtures against the likes of Roma, Atalanta, and Inter Milan upcoming in three of the next four rounds, it is clear that a win here is required for peace in Marco Baroni’s dressing room.
Cremonese, on the other side, are one foot back in the second class of Italian football. They clearly lack quality to stay competitive at this level, being the only team in the competition without a win after 20 matches.
The team’s board made one final move by appointing Davide Ballardini in Massimiliano Alvini’s place at the head coach position in mid-January.
We must admit Cremonese did look somewhat better in the previous three outings. They eliminated Napoli from Coppa Italia after all.
Cremonese also left a solid impression in the narrow 1-2 home defeat at the hands of Inter Milan last weekend.
Cremonese have grown in form under new manager Ballardini and we believe the time has finally come for them to celebrate the inaugural win of the season.
Lecce shipped at least two goals in each of the previous three league outings despite facing the likes of Verona and Salernitana in the last two in the process. We also fancy Cremonese’s top scorer and penalty-taker David Okereke (was on target in the last weekend’s home loss to Inter Milan) to score anytime here at the odds of 4.00.
