Colombia vs Venezuela
Copa America 2021
Date: 17 June 2021, Thursday
Kick-off at 22:00 UK/ 23:00 CET
Venue: Estádio Olímpico Pedro Ludovico (Goiânia).
Even Though not pretty, Colombia held their nerve to edge past Ecuador in the first group game of Copa America 2021. It was a tough battle by all means, Ecuador dominating the possession from the beginning, the Cafeteros had to sit back and absorb the pressure except for a brilliant team goal from set-piece Edwin Cardona.
Head-coach Reinaldo Rueda started the game without his prolific strikers from Atalanta, Duvan Zapata and Luis Muriel, the former played some part in the game coming on as a substitute in the 60th minute.
Venezuela were humbled by Brazil in the opener, they created very few chances and were forced back to defend their own penalty box most of the time and eventually ended up losing 3-0. The score-line could have been more humiliating if the likes of Richarlison and Gabriel Jesus were a tad bit sharper in front of goal.
Jose Peseiro must quickly regroup his team and set out with an attacking plan if his team has to get something from the second group game.
The win against Ecuador extended Colombia’s excellent run in the month of June, having previously defeated Peru 3-0 and then came back from 2-goals down to hold Argentina to a draw at Barranquilla.
Their 6 games prior to the tournament opener were entertaining and all of them saw over 2.5 goals with an aggregate to 11 scored to 13 conceded.
Venezuela on the other hand, are left with just 1 win from their last 7 and failed to score in 5. Their defense has been all over the place and conceded a massive 12 goals during the period. They are coming to this match on the back of a 4 match losing streak outside home soil.
It seems like the glory days of Venezuela are over and they looked like a team without a plan in the group opener. Colombia had their own problems in converting good starts to wins in recent months. But the money is now off their back after defeating a resilient Ecuador and we can back them to do the same against Vinotinto on Thursday.
Since the restart of international football in October, Colombia saw goals in all games before coming to this tournament. If Rueda starts either one of Muriel or Zapata here, we could see some goals here as well.
José Peseiro’s side doesn’t look comfortable in defense in recent outings and attack is more or less blunt and they are expected to struggle to get anything from this game.
