Peter Green - October 20, 2019
Club Brugge vs Paris Saint-Germain
Champions League
Date: Tuesday, 22 October 2019
Kick-off at 20:00 UK/ 21:00 CET
Venue: Jan Breydel Stadion (Brugge).
Against popular expectation, Group A is turning to be a cauldron of competition for the two spots. Record 13-time champions Real Madrid are dead-last in the table, and in fact, except for the French cavalry, every other squad is winless so far. If, just if the Belgians are able to make any kind of an impact with their home advantage this Tuesday, they might place themselves in the run for qualification.
But knowing PSG though, and their enormous firepower on disposal, it might prove to be a pipedream for home fans.
The Parisians have put themselves on the prime spot to ensure progression. They have won both their games so far in the competition, and are yet to have their defense breached. Their most impressive feat in the campaign would be the loss they inflicted against the Madrid outfit.
One more win this match-day, and it would take some serious bottle-job from Thomas Tuchel’s men to mess up their chances to get to the Round of 16.
The team went unbeaten in 14 of their last 16 overall fixtures and has won eight of their previous nine games. Impressively, they have been dominating opponents on a totally ominous scale this campaign. To quote a stat, the squad registered eight clean sheets from their former nine fixtures.
On the road, they are on a four-tie winning run, and all have been associated with clean sheets as well.
Moreover, one more win and they could boast scripting victories against every opponent in the group. Count on the Ligue 1 champions to take their European dream serious, and put on a worthwhile performance.
Coming to goals, the home advantage should play a role. Take into account that, while paling in comparison to PSG, Brugge is still a force to reckon with. They do have the form and talent to raise some challenges against the visitors.
In fact, they are on a 19-game unbeaten run overall, and on a 16-match invincible run in front of the home crowd. They might lose the match-up, but the squad should find the back of the net at least once.
