Steffen Schmidt - August 24, 2023
Chelsea vs Luton
English Premier League
Date: 25 August 2023, Friday
Kick-off at 20:00 UK / 21:00 CET
Venue: Stamford Bridge (London).
Chelsea will have a nice opportunity to clinch their first win of the season on Friday evening when they open Gameweek No 3 with the home clash against newly-promoted Luton at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues held Liverpool to a 1-1 stalemate on the opening day before suffering a disappointing 3-1 defeat away at ten-man West Ham in the London derby on Sunday.
It was an eventful affair with a lot of happenings in front of both goals. Carney Chukwumueka restored parity for Chelsea after Naif Aguerd’s opener from a James Ward-Prowse set piece.
Enzo Fernandez had an ultimate chance to give his team the lead before the break but the Argentine World Cup winner was denied from the penalty-spot (his first penalty-kick miss in career).
Chelsea then conceded two goals in the second half, one of which came late in the game when they had an extra man on the pitch following Aguerd’s red card.
Pochettino’s men ended the game with 17 shots but only 4 of these hit the target. It will be interesting to see whether they will find a way to be more efficient against one of the weakest teams in the league on paper.
Luton had a free weekend as their clash against Burnley got postponed. They started the season with a tough 4-1 defeat at Brighton in a match in which their back line conceded 27 shots, 12 of which went on goal.
Chelsea’s forward line failed to impress in the opening two fixtures but this is just the ideal fixture for them to bounce back. We expect a strong display from Pochettino’s men from the start to the end which should result in a commanding victory at Stamford Bridge.
The main pick is Chelsea to have the lead at the half time and win the match at the end at the 1.80 odds while we also like Nicolas Jackson to score his maiden Chelsea goal at the 2.05 odds.
