Benfica vs Liverpool
UEFA Champions League
Date: Tuesday, 5th April 2022.
Kick-off at 20:00 UK/ 21:00 CET
Venue: Estádio da Luz (Lisbon).
Liverpool are heavy favourites to win the Champions League quarter final tie against Benfica and Jurgen Klopp will be aiming on a fast start in the first leg at the Estádio da Luz on Tuesday.
The Reds fell at this same stage last season, the opponents being Zidane’s Real Madrid who thumped them 3-1 in the first leg. A strong result is therefore Klopp’s priority in the first leg against the Portuguese club.
Liverpool had a tough draw this season, but won all six games in a group involving Atletico Madrid, Porto and AC Milan. The round of 16 was again tricky with Inter Milan being the opponent and luckily the first leg 2-0-win San Siro deemed enough to send them to quarterfinals. However, they did suffer a late scare in the revere leg at the Anfield.
The narrow 1-0 defeat to Inter Milan remains as their only home defeat across all competitions this season. They won 19 of the 24 on the road, drew 4 and lost 2.
None the less, no other team can match Liverpool’s points per game away from across all top divisions in Europe in the 2021/22 season.
Benfica had some accolades of their own this term, having finished second and eliminated Barcelona from the group stage. This was done by a 3-0 win at home against the Spanish club in the early stages of the competition.
Two heavy defeats against Bayern in the group phase must be highlighted since the Portuguese club conceded a total of 9 goals over the two legs.
This is a big mismatch on paper and this is Liverpool’s match to win without any doubt. We will take the Merseyside Reds on an Asian handicap to win by 2 or more goal margin at Lisbon with this team managed by Jurgen Klopp gave nothing away to their opponents in recent weeks. On the other hand, Benfica have struggled to keep things tight at their end.
Diogo Jota is one of the consistent performers for Liverpool this season and he is coming to this fixture after scoring 4 goals in 5 appearances for club and country. The Portuguese striker who netted the opener in weekend’s win over Burnley is our pick to score anytime at the Estadio La Luz.
