Peter Green - November 1, 2018
Barnsley vs Southend
England – League One
Date: Saturday, 3rd November 2018
Kick-off at 15.00 UK/16.00 CET
Venue: Oakwell, Barnsley.
The 17th round fixtures of League One competition sees Barnsley taking on Southend at the Oakwell Stadium. Barnsley has high hopes for qualification to the Championship as they currently occupy the fourth position in the table while Southend sits in the mid-table at the eleventh spot.
Barnsley has had a comfortable two weeks with two back-to-back home matches. Last week they had a win over Bristol Rovers, courtesy their solitary goal by Alex Mowatt. The Rovers really pushed for the equalizer but the Barnsley defense stood strong.
Southend, on the other hand, is having the opposite fortune with two back-to-back away matches. Last weekend they were put to school by Sunderland by three unanswered goals. It was a slow kill and a tactical outclassing by the home team then. One first-half goal and two second-half goals completed the proceedings.
Kieffer More, Brad Potts, and Mamadou Thiam have been a lethal trio for the Barnsley team with seven, five and four goals each in the tournament. They have also developed a good understanding between themselves.
Tom Hopper and Simon Cox have been the main goalscoring threat for Southend. Hopper has scored seven goals so far, while Cox is just behind with six.
The home team has the higher chances of getting the available three points. They have been consistent at home and really knows how to take advantage of the home crowd. Their forwards have been clinical in front of the goal, and their defense has been really disciplined and rarely concedes at home.
Barnsley is currently on an eight-match unbeaten streak at home. In their last 13 matches at home, they have suffered just one loss. Whereas Southend has really struggled on the road. Just last week they were drubbed by Sunderland, where Southend conceded three goals without reply.
Expect Barnsley to win this match, where one more defensive masterclass will be performed by their backline. Barnsley will keep a clean sheet too as they aim to get to the top spots which ensure direct qualification to the championship.
