Besiktas vs B36 Torshavn
UEFA Europa League Qualifiers
Date: Thursday, 2nd August 2018
Date: 19:00 UK/ 20:00 CET
Venue: Vodafone Park (Istanbul).
The 2-0 win last midweek is Besiktas’ first ever meeting with B36.
B36 stunned Montenegrin OFK Titograd (formerly known as Mladost Podgorica) 1-2 on the road to make it to the Europa League second qualifying round for the first time ever. Gundadalur will thus have the honour of hosting Turkish giants Besiktas on Thursday evening.
The hosts have already done a massive job by making it to the second qualifying round. They had to feature the preliminary round which saw them go past Gibraltarian St. Joseph’s on penalties (2-2 on aggregate). They were inferior side on the pitch in both clashes against OFK Titograd, but somehow found two late second-half goals to go through to the next round.
Besiktas will, on the other side, play their first official game of the season on Thursday given the Super Lig campaign won’t start before mid-August.
The Black Eagles had an underwhelming domestic campaign last season. They only came fourth in Super Lig, failing not only to defend the title but to catch the Champions League spot as well. This is their return to the Europa League football after falling to Olympique Lyon in the quarter-final two years ago (3-3 on aggregate, loss on penalties).
Besiktas did not change their squad much compared to the last season. They still miss predator Cenk Tosun who signed for Everton last winter, but there is still time for them to find an adequate addition to their attacking line.
Vagner Love and Alvaro Negredo should be more than enough of firepower to intimidate the half-amateur B36 side. Anything but a confident victory for Besiktas in both legs of this tie would represent a massive surprise for us.
