Steffen Schmidt - February 9, 2023
AZ Alkmaar vs Excelsior
Dutch Eredivisie
Date: 10 February 2023, Friday
Kick-off at 19:00 UK / 20:00 CET
Venue: AFAS Stadion (Alkmaar).
AZ Alkmaar missed a big chance to climb to the very top of the Eredivisie standings by taking just two points in the previous two Eredivisie matches.
They shared spoils with the likes of Utrecht and Volendam in the previous two rounds. The 5-5 draw at home to Utrecht is impossible to explain, but the 1-1 stalemate away at Volendam certainly represented a massive setback for Pascal Jansen and his men.
AZ are still second in the league ladder, sitting just two points shy of Feyenoord who also slipped up in a 2-2 draw to PSV Eindhoven on Sunday.
Jansen’s men will get a nice opportunity to return to winning ways on Friday evening when they host bottom-half Excelsior in the first match of Gameweek No 21 at AFAS Stadion.
The match comes just three days after the clash against Utrecht in the last 16 round of KNVB Beker, though, and fatigue may play a role on Friday.
Excelsior ate 14th in the league standings at the moment, sitting four points above Emmen in the danger zone.
We have to say they have been dreadful travelers so far in the season, losing eight of ten league outings on the road and conceding 28 goals in the process.
AZ Alkmaar are massive favorites going into this tie and we would be very surprised to see them dropping the ball in the third consecutive league outing, especially since they are just two points below section-leaders Feyenoord at the moment.
We’ll back Alkmaar to win both halves at the 2.50 odds, while you can also take their top scorer Evangelos Pavlidis to score two or more goals at the attractive 5.50 odds.
