Peter Green - July 5, 2019
Algeria vs Guinea
Africa Cup of Nations
Date: Sunday, 7 July 2019
Kick off at 20:00 UK / 21:00 CET
Venue: 30 June Stadium (Cairo).
Algeria topped their group with maximum points in hand and it has to be said that they did so without having to break much of a sweat. Their last game against Tanzania in the final group fixture, saw them post a very comfortable 3-0 win by the last blast of the final whistle.
All three goals found their way into the back the net in the first forty-five minutes of the game through Islam Slimani breaking the deadlock and Adam Ounas bagging a neat brace. The squad finished the match with a clear majority in possession and twice as many goal attempts as their opponents, out of which six were on target.
Guinea, on the other hand, booked their spot in the round of sixteen after coming in third in their group with four points. Paul Put’s side snatched the only win of their campaign in their final group game against Burundi with his men slotting two unanswered goals into the back of the net.
His team also enjoyed the better share of possession and took fifteen shots at goal, out of which four worked the goalkeeper.
The winners of this fixture will be squaring up in the quarterfinals against the team that comes out on top in the clash between Mali and Ivory Coast.
The Algerians are likely to walk away with the win when the teams meet each other in the round of sixteen on Sunday.
Djamel Belmadi’s side have emerged victorious in all of their group fixtures and have scored six goals in the competition without conceding a single one in their own net. Their foes have not enjoyed a similar run of form and have just one win to their name in their last three games.
However, Paul Put’s men have amassed a total of four goals in their matches so far and have not been shy in creating chances in the attacking third.
We can certainly expect them to get their names on the scoresheet as well in the clash on Sunday, while the Algerians are poised as the favorites to walk away with the win at the end of the ninety minutes.
