Peter Green - July 29, 2019
AIK vs Maribor
Champions League Qualification
Date: Wednesday, 31 July 2019
Kick-off at 18:00 UK/ 19:00 CET
Venue: Friends Arena (Stockholm).
The first leg saw a fiery first half, as all three goals in the game came by the 40th minute itself. Later, both tightly wound their defence, and put an end to the flow of goals. Maribor did record the win, but they failed to keep a clean sheet.
Now, with an away goal scored against them, and their unimpressive recent run on the road, the Swedish club has the upper hand, despite lagging in aggregate.
They also have the confidence of dealing with a similar situation in the previous round too, where they lost the away leg and managed to make a comeback at home.
While it’s true that Maribor leads in aggregate, their away stats are not at all confidence-boosting in the previous days. They could register just a single win from the last five attempts, and lost three in a row too during the stretch. They also failed to keep a clean sheet in eight of their last ten away ties and conceded twice or more in three of their last five.
AIK, meanwhile, won four of their last five match-ups and scored two or more goals in all of these. At home, they are on a winning streak of three fixtures, and won seven of the last ten too. Going on, they lost just one of their last twenty-three appearances in front of the home crowd – which translates to one home loss in the last 12-month period.
As such, count on them to win this leg.
