The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is a tournament that brings together the best football talent from across the continent. It’s little surprise to know that football fans worldwide are clamoring to find a hesgoal live stream to follow the action.
As we head into the third round of group-stage matches at AFCON 2023, let’s take a look at the current top scorers and see who might be able to catch some of the competition’s historic goal scorers and their records.
The latest edition of AFCON was initially scheduled for June-July 2023 but was moved to January and February of 2024 due to Ivory Coast’s rainy season. This change marks the second consecutive time that this prestigious tournament has been held during these months, following last year’s event in Cameroon.
As we approach the third round of group-stage games at AFCON 2023, Baghdad Bounedjah from Algeria and Emilio Nsue Lopez from Equatorial Guinea lead the scoring tables with three goals each.
Hot on their heels are several players who have scored two goals in their first two matches. These include Aston Villa star and Burkina Faso captain Bertrand Traore, West Ham attacker Mohammed Kudus representing Ghana and Mamelodi Sundowns playmaker Themba Zwane of South Africa.
Meanwhile, well-known names like Marseille star Ismaila Sarr and Al-Nassr talisman Sadio Mane from Senegal, Liverpool icon Mohamed Salah from Egypt, and Leicester City striker Patson Daka from Zambia have only managed one goal so far in this tournament.
Cameroon captain Vincent Aboubakar holds the title for being one of the most recent highest goal scorers at an AFCON tournament. He took home the Golden Boot by scoring eight goals at the 2021 version of this competition.
Aboubakar’s final tally was the highest number of goals scored by an AFCON competitor since 1974, falling just one short of the all-time single tournament record.
The honor of holding the all-time single tournament record goes to the relatively anonymous (at the time) Pierre Ndaye Mulamba. He scored nine goals for Zaire in the 1974 tournament.
Not only did he become AFCON’s top scorer that year, but he was also named as the best player in the competition. His contributions played a significant role in helping Zaire secure their second African championship title.
While we anticipate more thrilling performances at AFCON 2023, it is always exciting to look back at historic achievements that have shaped this prestigious tournament.
